HMRC offer olive branch
HMRC have announced ‘My Tax Return Catch Up’ plan for those who were required to complete a tax return(s) but did not do so for any year up to 5th April 2012. For those that take part in this latest campaign they will receive the best terms available.
To opt in to the campaign individuals need to follow three easy steps:
1. Tell HMRC you want to join the campaign
This can be done online by completing a notification form which can then be sent electronically. This can be found by visiting http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/campaigns/mtrc-notification.pdf. Alternatively the same form can be printed and posted to:
HM Revenue & Customs
Local Compliance Centres
My Tax Return Catch Up team S0790
PO Box 3900

2. Complete all outstanding tax returns
Once an individual has notified HMRC of their intention to join the campaign all outstanding tax returns must be completed and submitted to the Revenue by 15th October 2013. 2010 tax returns and later years can be filed online.
For those that are unable to file returns electronically paper tax returns can be sent to the afore-mentioned address.
3. Pay all tax arrears
Once all outstanding tax returns have been filed, individuals must pay all tax or claim any repayment before 15th October 2013. It must be noted however that any overpaid tax and NIC for years up to 5th April 2009 are now generally out of time and cannot be refunded.
Should someone not be able to pay the full amount then they should contact the My Tax Return Catch Up Helpline on 0845 601 8818.
What are the benefits of participating?
By taking part in this campaign taxpayers can:
- Bring their tax affairs up to date quickly and straightforwardly;
- Take advantage of a dedicated helpline;
- Increase their chances of saving themselves a higher penalty; and
- Avoid having their tax bills estimated and any subsequent debt collection action, including court proceedings.
