HMRC found itself having to apologise for issuing 12,000 penalty notices to those people who have been removed from the self assessment process.
Despite around 130,000 people being removed from self assessment when HMRC changed their records, 12,000 still received penalty notices which warn of daily fines of £10 for non-filing of tax returns.
Reassuringly, HMRC know who the 12,000 are and will be writing to them to apologise and reassure them that they do not owe the penalty.
This latest faux pas follows a number of recent Revenue embarrassments, such as the incident in March when the department sent out 17,000 letters that wrongly claimed payments were late. It appears more needs to be done to improve HMRC's review processes.
