Taxman launches simple support solution
HM Revenue & Customs rolled out a new service this week, designed to ease the ‘huge backlog’ of tax claims that plagued their reputation earlier on in the year. The Revenue is reported to have appointed independent “facilitators”, who will act as neutral third-party mediators between individuals and the taxman in order to resolve disputes quickly. This new approach is in the hope that costs will be reduced, and individuals will be at less of a risk of a subsequent tribunal. The scheme, named “alternative dispute resolution programme” (ADR) is available to all individual taxpayers and small business where a tax issue is in dispute.
Need we worry about Jury Duty?
Following a recent article published in the Telegraph online, the importance of Jury Duty protection is once again re-iterated for those working through limited companies. Contractor specific Jury Duty insurance was given the thumbs up by leading finance journalist Jessica Gorst-Williams in her article entitled ‘What are your options if summoned to jury duty?’ this week.

IR35 – Intention of parties can be relevant
The IR35 Dragonfly Consulting case was once again brought to light this week, highlighting the point that the intention of parties can play a role in an IR35 investigation. As emphasised, whilst the intention of two parties to create a self-employed relationship is a minor and insignificant factor when considering employment status, it does however have a role to play.
