HMRC has told employers that they must improve their PAYE record keeping, after a good number of returns displayed incorrect data.
Around 80% of errors in employee details for the 2009/10 year related to name, date of birth or National Insurance number.
Wrong names of employees that appeared on returns included the following:
- 507 A N Other's
- 128 Mr, Ms or Mrs Dummy
- 572 surnames that only included the letter X, from Mr X to Mrs XXXXXX
- 75 with the surname 'casual'
- 11 with the surname 'cleaners'
- 9 with surname 'workers'
- 6 with the surname 'students'
- 824 with the surname 'Unknown'
40 people were apparently 200 years old or more!
Inaccurate information shown on employer PAYE annual returns and forms can create problems for employees. Businesses experiencing problems can seek help online by visiting here (submitting correct employer data) and here (tracing a National Insurance number).
