HMRC have agreed to the delivery of cloud services over the Public Services Network (PSN) and, in so doing, become the first government department to do so.
The PSN will substantially reduce the cost of communication services across UK Government and enable new, joined-up and shared public services for the benefit of citizens. PSN is creating one logical network, based on industry standards, and a more open and competitive ICT marketplace at the heart of the UK public sector.
Between now and the spring of next year, taxpayer data that is currently stored in local offices will be shifted to the network service. According to HMRC this will produce a saving of £1 million a year and provide greater security and greener data storage.
HMRC have entered into a contract with Hampshire based company, Skyscape Cloud Services, for centralised data storage in the G-cloud, the government's online IT services catalogue.
Phil Pavitt, HMRC's chief information officer, remarked, “it's a great example of how we're exploring smarter, more innovative solutions that make life simpler for us and help us provide a better deal for [taxpayers].”
