Stricter car insurance rules have come into effect this week as the government looks to cut down on the amount of uninsured drivers on Britain’s roads.
Drivers now have to declare their car as ‘off the road’ in order to avoid having to buy insurance, whereas before an uninsured driver had to be caught in the act of driving in order to be prosecuted.
Uninsured drivers will receive a warning and then a £100 penalty, and if the car remains uninsured then the car can be clamped and seized, even destroyed and the owner taken to court.
Uninsured drivers and vehicles have become a massive problem in recent times, with it being estimated that 1.4 million vehicles on the roads are uninsured. The DVLA and the Motorists Insurance Bureau will work in partnership to try and catch perpetrators and there is a definite message that the net will be tightened on those breaking the law.
The Department of Transport claims that 23,000 people are injured and 160 killed in incidents involving uninsured drivers each year.
The Department for Transport has also warned that any person found to be breaking car insurance laws will not only receive a criminal record, but also they will have to pay more for car insurance in the future.
The best way to check if your own vehicle is insured is to visit the motor insurance database (www.askmid.com), or if you need to classify your car as off the road, this can be done by making a ‘Statutory Off Road Notification’ (see here).
